Optical Network Engineer Responsibilities

The Optical Network Engineer will serve as a technical owner for customer networks and will be responsible for maintaining optical transmission systems. Key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining customer networks in the energy and transportation industries.
• Developing and completing proactive network maintenance tasks within required timelines.
• Responding to network emergencies and organizing recovery activities.
• Performing periodic network health checks and developing emergency plans.
• Supporting customer emergency drills.
• Reviewing network KPIs and preparing maintenance reports.
• Reviewing network performance and providing improvement suggestions.
• Supporting pre-sales activities.

Required Experience and Skills

Candidates should have at least 8 years of experience deploying or maintaining optical transmission networks. Applicants should be capable of independently leading fault location and troubleshooting activities and should have strong problem-analysis and problem-solving abilities.

Good communication and collaboration skills are also required. Candidates should be able to independently manage assigned responsibilities, demonstrate a willingness to learn and summarize technical knowledge, and have good proficiency with office software.

Experience in the energy and transportation industries is preferred. Huawei also highlights the importance of strong cybersecurity awareness.

Professional Knowledge Requirements

Applicants should have strong knowledge of SDH/MSTP/MPLS-TP, including SDH signal frame structures, multiplexing processes, and SDH equipment functional blocks.

Knowledge of WDM and OTN protocols, WDM transmission factors, signal flow, and transmission network protection protocols is also required.

Candidates should have more than eight years of optical transmission project delivery and maintenance experience involving OTN, DWDM, or SDH and should be able to understand business requirements and provide appropriate solutions.

Experience with optical transmission equipment from major vendors is useful, with preference for candidates familiar with Huawei optical transmission products. Knowledge of network management system installation and maintenance, basic Linux operations, AC/DC equipment-room power systems, optical fiber types, and maintenance instruments is also relevant.

Technical Tools and Network Knowledge

Applicants should be proficient in using equipment such as optical power meters, OTDRs, Ethernet testers, and multimeters. A basic understanding of data communication principles and customer network architecture is also required.
